The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) was founded in 1996 and officially began play in 1997, becoming the first women’s league backed by a major U.S. sports organization — the NBA.
The league launched with eight teams, including the New York Liberty, Los Angeles Sparks, Houston Comets, and Phoenix Mercury. Early stars like Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, Cynthia Cooper, and Rebecca Lobo brought credibility, excitement, and visibility to the new league.
The Houston Comets dominated the WNBA’s first four seasons, winning four consecutive championships and establishing the league’s first dynasty. The WNBA’s debut marked a historic moment for women’s sports — giving female athletes a professional stage and young girls across the country new heroes to look up to.
