During the 1980s and 1990s, international participation in the NBA began to grow steadily. One of the earliest and most influential figures was Hakeem Olajuwon, drafted first overall in 1984 from Nigeria. Olajuwon went on to become one of the greatest centers in NBA history, demonstrating that elite talent could come from anywhere in the world.
The 1986 draft also hinted at basketball’s global future. While the Boston Celtics’ tragic loss of Len Bias remains infamous, the same draft introduced Dražen Petrović of Croatia, a trailblazing European guard who proved that players from Europe could thrive at the highest level. Petrović’s success — and his untimely passing — left a lasting legacy, helping establish international basketball as an essential part of the NBA’s story.
