The Basketball Africa League (BAL) operates under a distinctive format that blends competitive balance, international exposure, and continental unity. Each season features 12 teams representing the best of African basketball, selected through two pathways: six direct qualifications from domestic champions and six additional spots earned through the Road to BAL qualifying tournaments.
The league is divided into three conferences — the Sahara Conference, the Nile Conference, and the Kalahari Conference — each playing in a round-robin format. The top-performing teams advance to the single-elimination playoffs, culminating in the BAL Championship Final. The league champion earns automatic qualification to the FIBA Intercontinental Cup, offering African clubs a stage to compete against elite teams from other continents.
Roster construction is equally deliberate. The BAL limits each team to a maximum of four foreign players, with at least two required to be from other African nations. This rule promotes a balance between domestic player development and the integration of international experience. Since the 2024 season, teams have been allowed expanded foreign player slots, reflecting both the league’s growth and the rising global interest in African basketball.
The result is a league that mirrors Africa itself — diverse, competitive, and globally connected — while staying true to its mission of developing homegrown talent and elevating the continent’s basketball ecosystem.
