The Mexico City Capitanes’ debut season in the NBA G League was anything but typical. Because of COVID-19 travel restrictions, the team was forced to base operations in the United States, playing the entire 2021–22 season from Fort Worth, Texas without hosting a single home game in Mexico City.
Competing exclusively on the road presented immense challenges—no home-court advantage, no local fan support, and constant travel fatigue. Yet, the Capitanes adapted quickly, earning respect around the league for their professionalism and competitiveness.
Despite the logistical hurdles, the season produced tangible results. Three Capitanes players—Gary Clark, Alfonzo McKinnie, and Matt Mooney—earned NBA call-ups, demonstrating the quality of talent and development within the organization. For a first-year team navigating uncharted territory, those successes validated the Capitanes’ mission: to build a bridge between Latin America and the NBA.
Their unconventional debut season wasn’t just a test of endurance—it was the beginning of a new era for international basketball within the NBA system.
