The Capitanes de Ciudad de México wasted no time making their mark on the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional (LNBP), Mexico’s premier basketball league. In their inaugural 2017–18 season, the team not only qualified for the playoffs but advanced all the way to the LNBP Finals — a rare feat for a newly formed franchise.
At the heart of this early success was head coach Ramón Díaz Sánchez, a seasoned Spanish tactician with prior experience coaching the Mexican national team. Under his leadership, the Capitanes combined European tactical discipline with Latin American flair, building a competitive and entertaining style of play.
Their roster blended veteran Mexican players and international imports, striking the perfect balance between local identity and global experience. Standouts like Pedro Meza, Fernando Benítez, and Emmanuel Ándujar played pivotal roles, each earning selections to the LNBP All-Star Game during the team’s debut campaign.
The Capitanes’ rise energized local fans, drew strong attendance figures, and rekindled national enthusiasm for professional basketball. Their success also signaled to the wider basketball world — including the NBA — that Mexico City was ready for something bigger.
