The Basketball Africa League (BAL) emerged from a bold, long-term vision to elevate African basketball and create a professional platform for the continent’s top talent. Officially announced on February 16, 2019, during NBA All-Star Weekend, the BAL was introduced by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and FIBA officials as a joint initiative — and a historic milestone for global basketball.
The BAL became the first league ever operated by the NBA outside of North America, underscoring the organization’s commitment to international growth. Designed to feature 12 teams from across Africa, the league identified Angola, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia as key participating nations.
Its competitive structure drew inspiration from the UEFA Champions League, emphasizing a merit-based qualification system through domestic leagues. This ensured that only the best-performing clubs from each country would earn entry into the BAL, raising the overall standard of play and generating continental excitement.
More than just a competition, the BAL represented a strategic investment in Africa’s future — a league designed to develop talent, grow infrastructure, and showcase the continent’s immense basketball potential on a global stage.
